After studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts her "first big thing" was playing Catherine Martin, the abducted young girl in "The Silence of the Lambs (1991)". She went on to play Sonya in Louis Malle's "Vanya on 42nd Street (1994)" and Dawn in Daniel Minahan's brutal send up of reality television "Series 7: The Contenders (2001)". Whether she is humming a Tom Petty tune, like her character did in "Lambs" or screaming for a bean dip, like her pregnant character does in "Series 7," Smith is known for giving brooding, detailed performances. In addition to stage work, her other interests include: filmmaking, she has directed a short film and a feature length documentary, journalism, she has had published interviews with actors Steve Buscemi, Ed Harris and Fred Ward and she has traveled extensively, especially to Africa. hide

Robert Altman's jazz-scored film explores themes of love, crime, race, and politics in 1930's Kansas City. When Blondie O'Hara's husband, a petty thief, is captured by Seldom Seen and held at the Hey Hey Club, she lauches a desperate plan to release him. She kidnaps the wife of a powerful local politician in an attempt to blackmail him into using his connections to free Johnny. Despite this being election time, he risks exposure by putting the political machine into action to free Johnny and thereby save his wife. Mrs. Stilton, meanwhile, has befriended Blondie and is impressed by her love and devotion to Johnny, especially in contrast to her own loveless marriage. Download:
