Paris, 1942. Robert Klein cannot find any fault with the state of affairs in German-occupied France. He has a well-furnished flat, a mistress, and business is booming. Jews facing discrimination because of laws edicted by the French government are desperate to sell valuable works of art - and it is easy for him to get them at bargain prices. His cosy life is disrupted when he realizes that there is another Robert Klein in Paris - a Jew with a rather mysterious behaviour. Very soon, this homonymy attracts the close - and menacing - attention of the police on the established art trader.

In the late 1800s, Martin and Rose manage a remote inn in the Pyrenean mountains. Unable to make enough money from their honest trade, the couple allow their adopted son Violet to murder their customers so that they can purloin their belongings. One stormy evening, a stagecoach shows up at the inn and its passengers decide to spend the night there, to the obvious delight of Martin and Rose. This could be a bountiful evening, they decide. Unfortunately, one of the new arrivals is a priest, Carnus, and Rose cannot help confessing her past crimes to him. How can Carnus warn his fellow travelling companions that they are all in mortal danger without breaching the confidence of a confession...?

On 15 January 1949, the former music teacher ClÃ©ment Mathieu arrives in "Fond de l' Etang" ("Bottom of the Well"), a boarding school for orphans and problematic boys, to work as an inspector. The place is administrated with iron fist by the cruel director Rachin, and most of the boys have severe punishments for their faults. ClÃ©ment decides to teach the boys to sing in a choir in their spare time, and identify the musical potential of the rebel Pierre Morhange, the son of a beautiful single mother for whom he feels a crush. He also has a special feeling for the young PÃ©pinot, a boy that expects the visit of his father every Saturday near the gate, but indeed lost his parents in the war. With his methods, ClÃ©ment changes the lives of the boys, of the other employees and his own.
