Actors: Geoffrey Rush | Charlize Theron | Emily Watson | John Lithgow | Miriam Margolyes | Peter Vaughan | Sonia Aquino | Stanley Tucci | Stephen Fry | Henry Goodman | Alison Steadman | Peter Gevisser | David Robb | Richard Ayoade | Edward Tudor-Pole
Based on the biography of the same name. The Life and Death of Peter Sellers is the story of the comic actor, who would later immortalize bumbling Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther series. From his beginnings in show business as a variety performer to his ultimate success as a movie star, Peter Sellers was a man of many faces. But it was also that moniker that caught up with his personal life, when Sellers was a man without an identity and only a library of oddball characters to make up for his personality. Focusing on his rising success and his family life, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers is the story of a man whose personal life clashed with stardom, while he was an individual completely immersed in the characters he portrayed.

Elizabeth (1998)

ElizabethGenres: Biography | Drama
Countries: UK
Directors: Shekhar Kapur
Actors: Cate Blanchett | Emily Mortimer | Kelly Macdonald | Amanda Ryan | Terence Rigby | Jamie Foreman | Edward Hardwicke | Angus Deayton | Daniel Craig | James Frain | Eric Cantona | Fanny Ardant | Kathy Burke | Richard Attenborough | Joseph Fiennes | Christopher Eccleston | Geoffrey Rush | Vincent Cassel | John Gielgud
The story of Elizabeth's ascendency to the throne, the plot of the movie is full of palace intrigues, attempted assassinations and executions. The movie starts with England divided by faith, Protestant vs. Catholic. The queen, Mary Tudor has no heir and her Catholic supporters fear the succession of her half-sister Elizabeth, a Protestant. They convince the queen to have Elizabeth arrested and put in the Tower of London but the queen hesitates and eventually refuses to sign her death warrant. It is announced that the queen is pregnant but it turns out to be a tumor and she dies of it a while later. Her Catholic supporters are forced to give the throne to Elizabeth. Elizabeth's first few years are shaky as she is not versed with the art of realpolitik and "rules from the heart instead of the mind". There is also the question of her succession as she is yet unmarried and her death without heir would mean the throne falling back into Catholic hands. She has many suitors but she eventually rejects them all. And aided by Sir Francis Walsingham she manages to kill all her enemies and ascends the throne as the "Virgin Queen".

Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007)

Monday, May 5th, 2008 08:05
Elizabeth: The Golden AgeGenres: Biography | Drama | History
Countries: France | UK
Directors: Shekhar Kapur
Actors: Jordi Mollà | Geoffrey Rush | Aimee King | Cate Blanchett | John Shrapnel | Susan Lynch | Elise McCave | Samantha Morton | Abbie Cornish | Penelope McGhie | Rhys Ifans | Eddie Redmayne | Stuart McLoughlin | Clive Owen | Adrian Scarborough
Nearly a decade after Cate Blanchett drew the attention of audiences and critics alike with ELIZABETH, the Oscar-winning actress returns to the role of the Virgin Queen. Though the protestant ruler has been on the throne for decades in 1585, Elizabeth I's reign is still under attack from both inside her country and from the continent. Her cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots (Samantha Morton), carries the favour of the nation's Catholics as she schemes for the throne from prison, while Spain's King Philip II (Jordi Molla) plots an invasion with the power of his famous armada. But Elizabeth is also concerned with the arrival of Sir Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen), a charming pirate and adventurer. Unable to reconcile her feelings with her crown, she encourages Bess (Abbie Cornish), her beloved lady-in-waiting, to pursue a relationship with Raleigh. Nine years haven't dulled Blanchett's ability to play this—or any other—character with an impressive range of fire and tenderness. Her chemistry with the infinitely watchable Owen is one of the film's highlights. As in ELIZABETH, director Shekhar Kapur doesn't restrict himself from using artfully constructed shots that aren't normally used in period dramas. It's a modern retelling of history, and Kapur and his director of photograpy, Remi Adefarasin, aren't content to let the film have the standard look of many films in the genre. Costume designer Alexandra Byrne follows the same logic, creating stunning dresses for Elizabeth that draw inspiration both from modernity and the time period. If Blanchett weren't such a gifted actress, the gorgeous costumes might threaten to overtake her as the star of the film.
