Gustav Knuth was born in Brunswick, Germany. As a student he sang in the Cathedral Choir. He studied acting with Casimir in Paris. His first work on stage was in 1918 at the Stadttheater Hildesheim, Germany. After a few years he played in Hamburg and from there went to Basel, Switzerland. In 1933 he came back to Hamburg and made his first movie in 1935. He was married to Elizabeth Lennartz and had a son, who became also an actor. From 1949 he was a member of the Schauspielhaus Zurich, Switzerland. He became a Swiss citizen and made his home in Küsnacht, Switzerland. He died of a heart attack in Neu-Münster near Zürich, Switzerland in 1987.
