The idea of the film was apparently given to Chaplin by a young reporter, who told him about the production line system in Detroit, which was turning its workers into nervous wrecks. In the film, Charlie becomes literally trapped in the machine and, in one of his finest patches of comic invention, is battered and buffeted by an automatic feeding machine introduced by his bosses to save time and money. Cured after his breakdown, he is arrested when he picks up a red flag that has fallen off the back of a lorry, and runs down the street to return it, exactly the same time as a left-wing demonstration comes round the corner. He meets 'The Gamine' in the back of the police van, who has also been arrested for stealing bread. From then on the theme is about two nondescripts trying to get along in modern times. "Smile, though your heart is breaking ..."

Tom Hardy (Bruce Willis) is a fifth-generation cop. When his father (John Mahoney) dies during the chase of a serial killer, Hardy further complicates matters by implicating his partner and cousin Jimmy (Robert Pastorelli) in a police brutality case. Two years after Jimmy is believed to have committed suicide, women from Hardy's past start to turn up dead, and his father's alleged killer is found. In a riveting climax, Hardy and the killer ultimately lock horns in a showdown that ties all the loose ends on both cases.

In the mid-1990s, two inmates bury the burned bodies of two lifers at Mississippi's infamous Parchman Farm; a third old-timer relates their story. They'd served 65 years for a murder they didn't commit, framed by a local sheriff while buying moonshine whiskey for a Manhattan club owner to whom they owed money. In flashbacks we see this odd couple thrown together (Ray is a fast-talking con man, and Claude is a serious man about to start work as a bank teller), the loss of Ray's watch (sterling silver, from his daddy), the murder and trial, the hardships of Parchman, and the love-hate relationship of Claude and Ray as they spend 65 years bickering and looking for a way to escape.

According to Boston Red Sox super fan Ben Wrightman, finding romance is just as likely as his beloved team winning the World Series. But then Ben meets Lyndsey Meeks, and suddenly anything's possible. Well... until Spring Training begins, and Lindsey sees Ben on ESPN in Florida acting like an idiot. But these games don't count, and she knows that there may be trouble once the first pitch is thrown. But she seems fine about it, because as she competes for a promotion, she says Ben won't be affected by her at work all the time. But things really get out of hand when Lyndsey gets hit by a line drive foul ball off of Baltimore Orioles' Miguel Tejada, and the Sox begin to loose. The relationship picks up, but when Lyndsey gives Ben the opportunity to go to Paris with her, he turns it down, because Seattle's rolling in and the Sox are 3 1/2 games behind New York and Ben says that they need him. Later, the Red Sox are in the ALCS against New York, and fall behind three games to none. Then, Ben decides to sell his Red Sox tickets to make Lyndsey happy and say that he loves her. She's at Game 4, and Lindsey has to find a way to get him to stop selling his tickets, and can the Sox finally win it all?

A trust fund party boy becomes the coach of his neighborhood youth soccer team after his model girlfriend kicks him to the curb and his former drinking buddies all decide to move on with their lives.
